Hello! My name is Robert Steel but please call me Bobby. I am pleased that you decided to check out this blog. I am very passionate about coffee and love to connect and contribute with the coffee community. I believe all coffee lovers are part of a society that is welcoming and transcends all boundaries. I am thrilled to finally pursue my passion and share my love of coffee with the society.
I have always been around coffee but did not gain an appreciation for it until my late teens when a friend of mine said that good conversations are done over a cup of coffee. I quickly discovered that this statement was correct as my friends and I stay out late at the diner having a cup of Joe and a good conversation. My passion for coffee did not fully develop until I was at university. I drank coffee to stay awake and to socialize at the diners during my down time. During this time period, I decided that I should be drinking good quality coffee if I was going to be drinking so much of it. I then began my pursuit for finding good quality coffee. This evolved to learning about different roasts, different ways to brew, different grinds, and espresso drinks. Which then evolved to learning about how to make espresso drinks, different kinds of coffee making machines, and other types of coffee equipment. This next evolved to learning more about coffee houses, the coffee business, the industry, the trade, the economics, the history, and the culture. It then evolved to learning about new innovations and trends in the coffee world. I now felt it was the time to contribute what I learned and continue my coffee self-education. All this took only 15 years. I am excited to see where I will be in the next 15 years. Perhaps I will own my own coffee house.
I live in the Washington DC Area with my wonderful wife Heather and my cat Sassafras. My house constantly smells like coffee and my kitchen is my laboratory for new espresso concoctions that I want to try. I own two coffee machines, one espresso machine, a pour over, a French press, a chemex, and a moka pot. I also have an assortment of coffee beans that I grind myself. When I’m not researching, experimenting, or blogging about coffee, you’ll find me spending time with my wife playing video games and relaxing in the sun. I believe that life is about enjoying the world with friends and family. We should be laughing with those that make us happy. I also believe that coffee is an excellent drink to have while enjoying life. That is why the Coffee Owl Society’s mantra is, “Drink Coffee, Enjoy the Moment!”
